Sleep Tracking Without a Camera: Tradeoffs

Most people decide against a bedroom camera before they have compared a single product. The camera is ruled out first, and everything else is chosen afterward.
This page is about that decision on its own terms — what a camera is actually good at, what you lose by removing it, and what the alternatives can and cannot see. It is not a product roundup. Why the camera goes first
Privacy is the reason people give, and it is a real one. A camera pointed at a bed is a different object from a sensor in the corner of the room, even when both are recording something. Nobody wants one aimed at them — not you, not a partner, and not the parent you are trying to look after. That is why privacy-first monitoring is a design starting point here rather than a feature we added later.
There is a second reason people mention less often: a camera produces footage, and footage has to live somewhere. Video of your bedroom is the most sensitive category of household data there is. Where it is stored, who can request it, and how long it is retained are questions you inherit the moment you plug it in. What a camera is genuinely good at
Being honest about this is the point of the page.
A camera gives you something no other consumer sensor does: a reviewable record a human can interpret. If something happened at 3 a.m. and you want to know what, video is the only consumer option that lets a person look and decide for themselves. Every other approach hands you an inference instead — a number, a state, a classification — and you have to trust the inference.
That difference matters more than a spec sheet suggests. It is why cameras remain the default in a lot of households despite everything below.
What a camera cannot see
Cameras have physical limits, and they are not subtle:
- Blankets. A camera sees the top of a duvet. Whatever is happening underneath it is not in frame.
- Darkness. Visible light is gone at night, so a camera either needs a light on or falls back to infrared, which many people find no less intrusive.
- The lens. A towel, a turned monitor, or a teenager who does not want to be filmed ends the recording entirely, and often silently.
- Your attention. Continuous footage only helps if somebody reviews it. Hours of video that nobody watches is a storage bill, not a monitoring system.
What camera-free sensing can and cannot do
Removing the camera does not give you the same information by another route. It gives you different information, and it is worth being clear about the trade rather than pretending it is free.
Wearables (rings, watches, straps) measure things at the wrist or finger — movement, heart rate, and related signals — and are good at producing night-over-night trends for one cooperative person. They require charging, they require being worn, and they cannot tell you anything about someone who takes them off or will not put one on.
Under-mattress sensors sit between the mattress and the base and pick up movement through it. Nothing to wear, nothing to charge. They are working through a mattress, which limits what they can resolve, and a bed with two people in it is a harder problem for them than a bed with one.
Radar senses movement and presence in the room through blankets and clothing, with no contact and no image. It is a wellness product: not a medical device, not FDA-cleared, and not a diagnostic tool of any kind.
None of these produces a picture, which is the entire point, and also the cost. You are trading a reviewable record for a continuous signal that does not require anyone to watch it.
How to think about the trade
The useful question is not "which is best" but "what am I going to do with this at 8 a.m.?"
If the answer is look at what happened, a camera is the only consumer answer, and you should weigh the privacy cost with that clearly in mind. If the answer is see whether the pattern changed — was the night restless, did the position habit hold, did somebody get up — then a camera is a poor fit for the question and camera-free sensing is a better one.
Most people asking this question want the second thing and reach for the first because it is the familiar object.
